The energy policy consequences of future CO2 capture and sequestration technologies
نویسنده
چکیده
Within the framework of the ETP project, the IEA has assessed the potential and the consequences of CO2 capture and sequestration for long-term energy policies. A number of policy scenarios were analysed quantitatively in order to assess the future role of CO2 capture technology from an economic, energy security and environmental perspective. The preliminary results suggest an important role for carbon capture and sequestration, provided certain new technologies will be developed successfully. This includes not only the capture and sequestration technologies, but also new clean coal fired power plants and fuel cell cars. Further R&D and technology learning based on deployment is essential in order to increase the energy efficiency and reduce the costs of CO2 capture technology. Apart from electricity production, CO2 capture can play an important role in the production of transportation fuels and in manufacturing industries. In fact there are less competing emission mitigation options in these sectors, which makes it an even more important strategy. CO2 capture helps to enhance supply security in regions where indigenous coal and gas can replace imports of oil and gas.

In this paper, we examine the potential of carbon capture and sequestration technologies to make a significant contribution to national and global efforts to control carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. We examine the performance of these technologies under two alternative future energy-policy scenarios. We conclude that carbon capture and sequestration technologies could indeed play a significant r...

This paper analyzes potentials of carbon capture and sequestration technologies (CCT) in a set of long-term energy-economic-environmental scenarios based on alternative assumptions for technological progress of CCT. In order to get a reasonable guide to future technological progress in managing CO2 emissions, we review past experience in controlling sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions from power pla...

As policy makers look for strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, they need to understand what options are available and under what conditions these technologies could be economically competitive. This paper explores the economics of carbon capture and sequestration technologies using the MIT Emissions Prediction and Policy Analysis (EPPA) model. We model two of the most promising carbon...

Atmospheric CO2 concentrations have increased considerably since the mid-1800s and are projected to increase even further during the coming century. This rapid increase in CO2 concentration corresponds with increases in the combustion of fossil fuel, changes in agricultural land use, and deforestation since the beginning of the industrial age. These observations have prompted scientists and pol...
متن کاملA Review of CO2 Sequestration Projects and Application in China
In 2008, the top CO2 emitters were China, United States, and European Union. The rapid growing economy and the heavy reliance on coal in China give rise to the continued growth of CO2 emission, deterioration of anthropogenic climate change, and urgent need of new technologies. Carbon Capture and sequestration is one of the effective ways to provide reduction of CO2 emission and mitigation of po...
